THE SHROPSHIRE WAY WALK- DAY 1. 

A formalisation of the itinerary for the first day of the walk. The weather was a little brighter than the day when we first did the walk back in June, and was very pleasant.

1. Turn right out of Craven Arms Station, down the A49 and turn right, opposite the Shropshire Discovery Centre.

2. Follow the Shropshire Way footpath across fields, following the line of the railway line. On reaching the road (Watling Street), turn right and cross the B4368 and then take a left turn, again marked Shropshire Way.

3. Continue across fields:

Cross a minor road and more fields and the drive to Sibdon Castle Farm. Aim for the gate to the left of a small wood. At the gate, keep right up the hill, heading for a kissing gate in the right-hand corner.

4. Skirt the wood, keeping right until the top of Hopesay Hill is reached. 3.1 miles to this point.

5. Go down the hill towards Hopesay:

Go right on to the road and continue along the road for a short distance. Turn left at the pretty obscured Shropshire Way sign and pass the Church on the left. After the Church, follow the track up the fields keeping far right, heading for a gate under a big oak tree.

6. Pass through the gate and head straight on across stubble. Cross fields, eventually taking a right turn to reach the track leading to Kempton. Turn left down the track and at the bottom, turn right and then left, down a narrow road. Look out for the Shropshire Way sign to turn right along a short, but very mucky track and then go across fields to reach the Bridge over the River Kemp. 6.5 miles to this point.

7. From the bridge, bear left across the potato fields until the farm track leading to Walcot Wood is reached. Turn right up the track and follow it into the woods. After 25 minutes, turn left at a four way junction.

Go on through the woods and then through a gate to the right of the main track and past two houses. At the road, turn right and then left soon after to enter Bury Ditches. Take the right hand path, just before the main car park and go up to the hill fort.  9 miles.

8. Leave the viewpoint and at the bottom, turn left at the T-junction, through the woods, following left the Shropshire Way signpost, propped against the tree.

9. Through the woods and across field, turning left towards Guilden Down. On down the road towards Clun, taking the Shropshire Way footpath on the right to cut off a section of the road.

10.    Enter Clun.

12.2 miles with nearly 600m ascent.

 Mortimer House, Dukes Road and Back Tor We fancied a longer walk today as we'd signed up to Macmillan's Peak District Mighty Hike and we felt that we needed to start training sooner rather than later. Although we tend not to go out for walks at the weekends if we can avoid it to avoid parking problems, the weather looked very good. To be confident of a parking spot, we set off (relatively) early for Mortimer House. It had been a while since we'd done this walk, even though it is something of a favourite of ours. The drive was pretty quick- about 50 minutes, probably another benefit of getting out early. Striding out on Cartledge Flat After parking up just by Mortimer House we set off along Dukes Road with a lovely clear blue sky with only a few clouds in the distant west. There had been substantial repair works to the moorlands around us with lots of heather brash spread on bare areas of peat and breakwaters of rocks in rivulet runs . Monday March 4th

 Bleaklow: Grinah and Barrow Stones After the disappointment of not being able to get out for a walk with Ann and Julian on Friday, we determined to make the best use of a dry day on Monday March 4th. We decided to do a walk that we last did in March 2022, described in the guidebook as "adventure that delivers untamed wildness for the Dark Peak connoisseur!". This description certainly appealed to David. After a pit stop for a coffee and a gander at the ducks at Fairholmes, we set off for the Fagney Plantation, where we parked up. The day was clear, still and cold(ish), with superb reflections in the reservoirs of the surrounding scenery. The first section is along the road up to the turning circle and thence to the old stone bridge across the Derwent at Slippery Stones. From here, the walk to Humber Knolls is pleasant (if muddy) and then beyond to Hoar Clough is fairly easy going. Beinn a' Ghlò: Càrn Liath, Bràigh Coire Chruinn-bhalgain and Càrn nan Gabhar A big day out for David on his own. The Beinn a' Ghlò range is a set of three Munros to the east side of Glen Tilt, with a purpose-built car park which already had quite a few cars parked there when David arrived at 09:00! Strangely enough, the trudge up the farmer's track to where the path branched off towards Càrn Liath seemed quite wearying but it was probably just a matter of warming up. Initial track towards Càrn Liath. Restored path clearly visible The path up Càrn Liath was clearly visible as a great deal of effort had gone into restoring it as it had become extremely eroded. I reached the summit after about two hours- lovely views, but the car was still visible!
