 Patterdale and Angletarn Pikes

After our lovely stay in Patterday celebrating David's retirement in January 2020, we decided to return this year. We've had three previous January Lake District stays with lovely weather, so we weren't upset that we had a couple of named storms this time. We had chosen Crook A Beck Barn as our accommodation because it looked warm, comfortable and well-equipped. We weren't disappointed! We sat out the worst of Storm Isha on Tuesday and were ready for a walk today. Another of the attractions of Crook A Beck was that we could walk directly from the house and, in fact, we didn't use the car from after we parked on Monday until we left on Friday. There's a very clear and relatively gentle path from Rooking, just up the lane, to Boredale Hause so this was an obvious choice on this dry but very breezy day. Boredale Hause provided a view of Crook A Beck and its location- it's by the white house just left and below the centre of this picture.

Getting closer to Angletarn Pikes, the wind was really picking up and David had his hat blown off a couple of times.

At the top of the northern pike David stayed long enough to take a rather uneven panorama before having a look at the southern pike.

Harvy's map only had a spot height for the northern pike and the ascent of the southern pike just seemed a little too much in the wind, so no real attempt was made to visit its summit. The OS map showed a difference of 2 metres in height- David would have been very disappointed not to have visited both summits if they had been the same height, or (heaven forbid) the southern top had been higher!

Returning to Boredale Hause gave views of familiar hills, some visited decades ago but Helvellyn back in 2020. It's always good to have a good few hills as excuses for future visits.

The return to Crook A Beck was a little more direct, slightly steeper, but ending at a "Gate with Style" a hundred yards or so from the house.

A very breezy and enjoyable walk of a little over 3½ miles and 420m ascent.

 Mortimer House, Dukes Road and Back Tor We fancied a longer walk today as we'd signed up to Macmillan's Peak District Mighty Hike and we felt that we needed to start training sooner rather than later. Although we tend not to go out for walks at the weekends if we can avoid it to avoid parking problems, the weather looked very good. To be confident of a parking spot, we set off (relatively) early for Mortimer House. It had been a while since we'd done this walk, even though it is something of a favourite of ours. The drive was pretty quick- about 50 minutes, probably another benefit of getting out early. Striding out on Cartledge Flat After parking up just by Mortimer House we set off along Dukes Road with a lovely clear blue sky with only a few clouds in the distant west. There had been substantial repair works to the moorlands around us with lots of heather brash spread on bare areas of peat and breakwaters of rocks in rivulet runs . Monday March 4th

 Bleaklow: Grinah and Barrow Stones After the disappointment of not being able to get out for a walk with Ann and Julian on Friday, we determined to make the best use of a dry day on Monday March 4th. We decided to do a walk that we last did in March 2022, described in the guidebook as "adventure that delivers untamed wildness for the Dark Peak connoisseur!". This description certainly appealed to David. After a pit stop for a coffee and a gander at the ducks at Fairholmes, we set off for the Fagney Plantation, where we parked up. The day was clear, still and cold(ish), with superb reflections in the reservoirs of the surrounding scenery. The first section is along the road up to the turning circle and thence to the old stone bridge across the Derwent at Slippery Stones. From here, the walk to Humber Knolls is pleasant (if muddy) and then beyond to Hoar Clough is fairly easy going. Beinn a' Ghlò: Càrn Liath, Bràigh Coire Chruinn-bhalgain and Càrn nan Gabhar A big day out for David on his own. The Beinn a' Ghlò range is a set of three Munros to the east side of Glen Tilt, with a purpose-built car park which already had quite a few cars parked there when David arrived at 09:00! Strangely enough, the trudge up the farmer's track to where the path branched off towards Càrn Liath seemed quite wearying but it was probably just a matter of warming up.
